The Couples' Relay is a great way to be with your sweetie in a healthier way than gorging on chocolates and cholesterol-rich meals - Tamalpa Runners is sponsoring this unique athletic lovefest where partners split the work on a 4 mile course. One member of the team runs two one-mile loops and then tags her waiting mate who does the same loops. If you don't have a romantic partner, that's not a problem. There are many divisions, such as father/daughter, mother/son, grandparent/grandchild, gay/lesbian, to name a few. There are also combined age groups for all the seventeen divisions. Race officials will try to match you up with a partner on race day if you don't have one. There are shirts to the first 75 teams entered and awards in a variety of categories, as well as raffle prizes.
Barry Spitz,Independent Journal columnist on running news, and author of many books, including DIPSEA, The Greatest Race, says, "The Tamalpa Runners' Couples Relay is not only Marin's lone relay race, but one of the most enjoyable races of any type." Barry does have a bias, since he founded the race in about 1979 and directed it for thirteen years. It was held at Larkspur Landing Shopping Center for the first nineteen years and at Vintage Oaks Shopping Center in Novato for the last ten years. Many of the top male and female runners throughout the bay area have participated in this fun race.
