I think this decision may be less about overrall safety (all runners, spectators, volunteers and law enforcement) than it is about pressure from the CHP/jurisdiction providing permits for the Dipsea Race (in order to satisfy law enforcement safety alone). Not that I don't care about our local law enforcement, especially those that make it possible for us to run our most cherished race. I do think that there will be more injuries, perhaps very serious injuries, on the new section; especially for those who are older and/or less skilled at working the very technical sections of the course. I find that I am very well equipped to avoid falls, even when people have gotten tangled up with me, but I do know that there are others who may not have the reaction time or footing that an experienced young runner might have. I worry about the older, less experienced runners who get caught up in crowds and those that may get tangled up with them by chance. With all that said, advantage to great trail runners, all those amazing and skilled older speed demons who run earlier and those that happen to get lucky and have less congestion during this section. |
