Is TCRS going soft? As the mighty Hills of Spring chuckled softly throughout the county, the debate at October's Jewell Trail TCRS was whether the course used twice during the 90's might be a bit too long, that it needed a "modification." Transcripts of the deliberations will show that even the proponents of keeping the historic longer course didn't put up much of a struggle, and in fact the "adjusted" course proved sufficiently lengthy and challenging. Tom Lyons certainly voiced no complaints, opening a monstrous lead on the climb up the ridge and comfortably holding off a return-trip challenge from Brad O'Brien and Rob Flatland. Christina Lachman, Florencia Gascon-Amyx and Diane Prater all came off the downhill onto the final bikepath stretch quite closely bunched, and Christina managed to just pull away for the win. It was a beautiful morning, a bit chilly on the opening flat stretch along the stream, but while the climb up onto the Olema Ridge was relentless, the views of Tomales Bay and surrounding ridges were amazing, and the warm sunshine was just right. Our ace finish-line crew had their final tune-up before the November 5 finale at Redwood High School, when the 5-K finishers stream in rapid-fire, but this crew is good. They can handle it. Start and finish in front of the gymnasium, 9:00 a.m. - Jim Myers
