News from 2013 and 2014

41st Annual Christmas Relays, December 14, 2014

Traditionally the Tamalpa Runners field several teams in each age group for the Christmas Relays.  In 2013 Tamalpa fielded 14 Teams, in 2012 we fielded 15 Teams, and in 2011 we fielded 18 Teams!  The Christmas Relays are made up of 4 person teams with each person running one 4.5 mile leg.  Each 4 person team runs a total of 18 miles.  The Relays start at 9:00 AM.  Tamalpa will preregister and pay for the entry fees for all teams.  You will be responsible for paying for 1/2 of your entry fee, or $9.00.  Please send a check in the amount of $9.00 to Frank Ruona, 4 Windmill Place, Novato, CA 94945 prior to the Relays if possible.  Otherwise you can  pay me the morning of the relays.    Also, you need to have a valid 2014 or 2015 USATF card to score for a Tamalpa Team.

If you do not have a 2014 USATF Card, you can obtain a 2015 USATF Card which will make you eligible for the 2014 Christmas Relays and all USATF Races (Road, Cross Country and Ultra Races) in the year 2015.  If you need a 2015 USATF card contact me and I can issue you a 2015 Card upon the receipt of $30.00 or, preferably, you can obtain a USATF card online at www.pausatf.org.  If you register for your USATF card online, make sure you put down Tamalpa, Club #100 as your Club.  If you do not have an USATF card by race day, be prepared to get your USATF card from me on race day.  If you are interested in running the Relays, please let your racing team captain or me know before 12/5/14.

This year the Christmas Relays are part of the Pacific Association Road Racing Grand Prix Series.  The Relays count as a scoring race on the Grand Prix Series for teams only.

Once we have organized the teams, it will be the responsibility of the individual team members to decide who will run which of the 4 legs of the relay.  Certain individuals have advised me that they would prefer to run the first or second legs of the relay because they have time commitments to be somewhere later in the day.  Please cooperate with these individuals and allow them to run early legs in the race.

For those Tamalpans who want to car pool to the race, a group will be leaving from the front of the Brew Pub at Larkspur Landing at 7:15 AM on Sunday, 12/14/14.  If you drive directly to the start of the race, we will gather at the Lake Merced Parking Lot where Sunset Boulevard meets Lake Merced Drive.  Try to be there by no later than 8:15 AM so that we can organize the individual teams.  We can make changes to the team at any time up until the start of the race.  Please let me know if you can NOT make the race so that we can make an attempt to replace you and field full scoring teams.  I plan to have a Tamalpa Table in the Lake Merced Parking lot where we will pass out the race numbers and have bagels, coffee and drinks.  I look forward to seeing you there between 8:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.  Last year our masters’ women, senior men, super senior men, Veteran men and Veteran women took first place in the relays.   Let's see if we can have another good year for Tamalpa at the relays.  It should be fun!

Stay healthy and train smart and be ready for a good end of the year race!

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact me by phone-(415) 898-9340 or by e-mail-fdruona@comcast.net

July 19th TCRS Run/SWIM Challenge

This year the committee responsible for the annual TCRS Summer Golf/Run (evening summer dinner) event has decided to make a change. Unlike the Woodminster Cross Country Race (which has not changed a single thing since it’s classic inaugural event 49 years ago), the TCRS Summer biathlon Committee has unanimously (if impetuously) voted to change the venue and the sport combination: from Golf at McInnis to SWIM 300 Yard Time Trial at Marinwood.

6:00 pm. TCRS from Marinwood, over the bridges and thru the woods, middle school, hills and trails. Somewhere between 3.1 and 6.9 miles.

6:30 SWIM - 300 Yard Time Trial at the Marinwood Pool. After you run, you can come into the pool, where there are men’s and women’s locker rooms and showers, you can change into your swim wear of choice. Report to one of our two Time Trial Judges (think Kent Morales, Seth Davis). We will have two lanes marked off for swimmers to complete their race. The Time Judge will record your time in the 300.

There will be two categories of competition:

ONE BIATHLETE competitor for those who run and swim. Both male and female winners will be recognized.

FAMILY TEAM COMPETITORS (son, daughter, sibling, spouse (or ringer) relay. Tamalpa member must run. Son, Daughter, sibling or spouse completes the swim portion.

Another important note: if you have really young kids who would love to compete in the swim portion, they may complete some of the laps [i.e. Seth Davis swims 6 laps, tagging in relay fashion (in pool start to all relays, no diving) and then his son Sawyer completes the remaining 6 laps; total time will be recorded]

The Committee (Tim McCarthy, Brian McCurdy, Dan Lee (and anyone else standing within our periphery) will then meet in an undisclosed location to tally the results and determine the winner of the first ever Tamalpa Run/Swim Biathlon. Awards Presentations to follow in the pool/barbecue/buffet area.

During the swim (and, actually during the run), the pool will be open to everyone to enjoy (bring a sweatshirt and pants and lots of warm towels, you know what Mark Twain said about those “Bay Area” summers).

BYO beer, refreshments, and salads. Tamalpa will provide burgers, veggie burgers and hot dogs to barbecue at the barbecue area.

Bring your nieces, nephews, sons, daughters, friends and neighbors (and friends of neighbors). to enjoy the pool, park and play area.

Spread the word. We hope to have a nice turnout to our first ever Midsummer night’s swim/run/barbecue event. Saturday, July 19th, 6:00 p.m. Bring your family to enjoy an open, recreational evening swim.

Tamalpans Run Boston

The indominable spirit of the United States was on full view at the Boston Marathon on Monday the 21st, of April. There was a team showing of Tamalpa Runners there that we can all be proud of some of which are listed here.

American Meb Kefleghzi took the win in 2:08:38! Great to see him healthy for race day and pull it off! First American win in at least 30 years... Rita Jeptoo was repeat winner in 2:18:57. She came on stronger later in the race than any of the others- and it seems to be her pattern, e.g. 35-40K , that 5K in 15:44 or 5:01 pace! Wow! last thing I'm thinking about is picking it up after mile 22..There was a strong finish showing in the women's field: many placing in low 2:20's...Note that Gold medalist in 1984, Joan Benoit Samuelson, won the 55-59 division in 2:52:10: that's within a minute or so of Shirley Matson's and Sister Marion's time in their 50's! Our own Diana Fitzpatrick placed 6th in the same division with a 3:17:24. Way to go Diana! Now to point to WS 100..Dean Karnazes always needs a longer workout, so he ran to the start in 3:45 and ran the race in 3:25:48!

Olympian, Magdalena Boulet who lives in the East Bay, placed 3rd in 40+ division with a 2:41:36

Andy Valla, Brendan Donohoe, Bryant Benter, Thomas Parker, Diana Fitzpatrick, Roxanne Woodhouse, Elizabeth Shortino, Dean Karnazes, Terry Hermiston, Kathy Johnson, Wes Estes, Bruce Benter, Gayle Ehrean, Erin Shippey, Tim Fitzpatrick, Joy Norris, Michelle Hermiston, James Morris, Robert J. Gormley. Sr., Susan Kreusch, James Flanigan, Michael Klopefer. Congratulations to all who ran!

April TCRS and Awards Breakfast

April TCRS and Awards Breakfast is on SATURDAY, April 26th. The front page of the Gazette says Sunday but we are indeed running and eating on Saturday at the Lucas Valley Community Center.

As usual, the race starts at 9:00 am. This year's course is a totally new one. It starts and finishes at the Community Center and incorporates the rolling residential streets of Lucas Valley. All but one mile of the 5.5 miles is on pavement, so wear your road shoes. Breakfast and awards start immediately thereafter.

March TCRS Results

Results from Sunday's race up and down Horse Hill are available on the March results page. If you spot an error, please send an email to webmaster@tamalparunners.org.

2014 TCRS Schedule

Variety is the Rule for This Year's TCRS's.

2013 was a terrific year for the Club runners who excel in our TCRS races. 2014 promises to be equally enjoyable as we have planned an impressive variety of race offerings that should appeal to everyone. We'll keep some familiar favorites, and throw in some older courses that will take many of you down memory lane.

January (the 12th) starts the series with our traditional Tennessee Valley dash to the beach and back. Will we see another course record this year? In February (the 16th) we'll tackle the challenging hills and single track of Indian Valley. March (the 9th) takes us to a locale we haven't seen in many years - Horse Hill in Mill Valley. April (the 6th) returns us to the Lucas Valley Community Center for our annual Awards Breakfast and a hilly preprandial assault on the surrounding slopes. In May (the 11th) we will run the longest TCRS we've seen in quite some time, almost 9 miles from San Marin High School to the end of Stafford Lake. That's like an ultra for us TCRS'ers. July (the 19th) is our annual and always popular Golf/Run evening duathalon at Smith Ranch. And yes, the big hill will be in play! August (the 10th) gives us a relatively new course high up in Tam Valley. September (the 14th) is almost the mirror of August when we sky along the Alta Fire Road above Marin City. October (the 12th) returns us to the incredibly popular Bahia Vista/Rush Creek trails. Finally, we end the year in November (the 30th) with the 5K at Redwood High bike path. The traditional table view of the 2014 schedule is available here.

As we always disclaim, these dates are subject to change depending on PA races, etc.etc.etc.

Two more things: we will also be awarding some type of prize to the winners of the age divisions. Don't know what yet, but it will be worth having. And, we would love to see many more of you out there for these races. The TCRS is always a challenge with excellent competition. It's also a wonderful opportunity to see some club members you don't bump into on your familiar runs in Marin.

New Year's Morning Run

Once again Jack Burns is organizing a New Year's morning run starting at Deer Park. This run always gets a BIG turnout - this year Jack is hoping for a 100+ runners. Everyone starts running together, but the run splits into groups that go varying distances at different speeds. All are welcome!

The run, as usual, starts at Deer Park School in Fairfax at 10:00 AM. I look forward to seeing everyone. Call if you have questions. 415 699-9891 Jack Burns

Annual Golf - Run - Biathlon

Join the Annual Tamalpa Summer Golf-Run Biathlon

Saturday - July 20th, 2013

We are just a week away from the 3:00 tee time at McInnis followed by the 6:00 run around the golf course, then onto the levees and back around near the club house.

So, far, we have a smaller group than last year…so, let's try to rally two more groups of four! Again, this year, we are going to honor the relay division. Previous winners of the relay division include Peter Eisenberg and his beautiful, non-golfing bride Liz Shortino. The golf run relay division is a great opportunity to compete with a family member on your team!

If you know of anyone that would like to run but not golf or golf but not run. Perhaps a son, daughter, parent, aunt, uncle, invite them out to golf for you; we will record their score and then you do the ‘back nine' with your flats! The usual golf/run plan and format,(secret handicapping committee will meet while we enjoy post-race beverages). We will add the scores from the links to the time on the trail and come up with our low gross winners.

3:00 golf
6:00 run
7:00 – 9:00 dinner, awards, music and cold beverages on the patio.

Please email or text 415-218-2761 (cell) to reserve your spot.
We have plenty of room on the golf course!

Thanks to the TCRS team for a great event, to Frank for the awards, to Don Lindsey, Scott Schneider, and Karen Steele for recording the sticks with good cheer, and to Joaquin and Bill for the food and drink.

March TCRS Results

Another twisty-turny course, with lots of runners racing thru the tall weeds and over the small bumps, but Tamalpa runners are getting better at keeping a sharp eye out for white arrows; this months's lost runner count was lower than that of February. Results from the third TCRS of 2013 are here. Thanks to the management team for another great event.

Tamalpa Runners at Redding

We had a few teams travel way up to Redding for the John Frank 10-mile. Race reports say it was a strong head-wind heading down the canyon on the return leg. Nevertheless, way to go Tamalpa. Results from Frank include several non-Tamalpan runners that you might know. Full results including team scores may be found here.
