Tamalpa Runners - Track Meet Results:

June 19, 2007

It was a small crowd at the San Rafael track that witnessed the return of Steve Shapiro and the debut of his 6 yr. old daughter Sam. It was fitting that the return and debut occurred the same evening as it was Sam’s birth that pulled Steve from competing on the oval. However, Steve pulled “Iron Man” duty by competing in all races, but met his match when racing against his little girl. Young Sam, though badly beaten in time terms, in the 400, bested her Dad on an age-graded basis. In the shorter sprints, Sam out-leaned Steve at the tape twice causing the old man to toss away his shoes and run the 2 mile in bare feet. Hugh Van Ness returned from injury to post a National Class 80%+ 800 where his monthly duel with Chris Oakes faded into the background as they both watched Jon Rushman pull away from the pack on the 2nd lap to post a sub 2:20 time. Both Jon and Chris had near National Class times also. Malcolm Fearon continued to prove that bikers can sprint as he outpaced the field in both the 200 and 400, although Tricia Wallace upheld the distaff side’s honor in the 200 by surpassing Malcolm on an AG basis. Brian McKinney also earned “Iron Man” recognition, although he skipped the 100 (an optional race) that was won, again, by the meet director’s son, Ryan. Hope to see more of you at next month’s meet on July 17th. - Kevin Mangan
